Photographer Overview
James’ approach to photography is through crafting thoughtful imagery; he creates connections with people both in front of and behind the camera, uses considered compositions and angles with vehicles, and finds the beauty in the everyday, using a mixture of techniques; analogue, digital or CGI, depending on the project.
James inherited his first analogue camera from a grandparent, an ex-miner, who hand developed imagery in his bath and dried the negatives in a wardrobe. James went on to study the medium at university in both Edinburgh and Toronto, he documents his experiences in a considered, stylised, and tangible way, for both personal, editorial and commissioned projects, his work always centres around colour, form and light, whether natural or recreated.
James’ work has been recognised by respected awards and galleries including: Streetlevel Photo works, Stills Centre for Photography, Format Photo Festival, Brighton Photo Festival and Contact Photo Festival, NOOR and The Magnum Foundation.
