Citizens of Hackney by Alex Amoros
Alex Amoros

10 - 16 December 2020

Citizens of Hackney is a project carried out in the different areas of the Hackney Borough of London during August 2020.

The Subjects have been photographed in natural light and in colour to show the diversity, creativity, culture and variety of Hackney during this dark year.

"This idea came to my mind during a sunny day walking through the Borough. I thought it would be a great idea to show a positive vision of the pandemic, this is the reason why I decided to use bright colours and light. I wanted to show some light in a year full of darkness and shadows.  Another reason is that we can all reinvent ourselves in times like the ones we have experienced this year, which was a challenge both on a personal and global level. Hackney is an area of London full of art, youth and creativity, all these factors mixed with the locals generate a cultural diversity that I wanted to highlight.

I divided my work according to the areas that I covered every day. I made the project in approximately two weeks working every day between 4 and 8 hours, all on foot walking an average daily of 8 miles. The final result of the project was specified in a photobook with 91 portraits where the first edition of 50 units has been sold out and in this exhibition of the AOP, this book is part of the Martin Parr Foundation.
