Lion: Pride before the Fall by George Logan

19-25 November 2020

Lion: Pride Before the Fall presents an extraordinary collection of wild lion photography with a clear, vital message – join the fight to protect Africa’s last wild lions, or risk losing them forever.

With its array of poignant, thought-provoking images, it celebrates the lifecycle of the lion in all its beauty and raw ferocity and serves as a stark reminder of all that we stand to lose. Because with fewer than 20,000 African lions left, the time to act is now if we are to secure a future for this most iconic of species.

The lion is Africa’s signature wild animal, yet it has vanished from 90% of its historic range. They have no natural predators in the wild, yet we are losing them at the rate of two per day. Unbelievably, lions are currently on course to be extinct in the wild by 2050.

In the UK we have always celebrated lions. They have not lived wild in the British Isles since the Pleistocene era, yet we have an affinity with them that borders on the irrational. We have lions on our flags, our sporting team kits, our money. Perversely, there are more lion statues than the real thing. Everywhere you look you see lions... except where it matters most. In the wild.

Uniquely for a wildlife book, George collaborated with some of the best creative minds at London's top agencies, to produce powerful, challenging imagery which confronts and highlights the dangers that the last remaining lions still face, such as habitat-loss, canned hunting, trophy hunting, human-wildlife conflict and the real possibility of extinction. These images will spearhead campaigns to raise awareness and accompany the book launch.

This work is the culmination of over 10 years following and photographing lion prides across Africa, including Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa.

The profits from the sale of this book will support, protect and help re-establish the Last Lions of Meru, a major conservation initiative, in Kenya.
