AOP 2014 Photography Awards now open

We’re delighted to announce details of our 2014 Photography Awards. Entries are now invited from AOP Full Members who have a selection of 17 categories to choose from and AOP Assistant Members who can choose from two. Non AOP members can also take part in the Awards, via the AOP Open Award. Go to www.the-aop.org/awards for a full category list.

All entries must be submitted via our website, early bird entrants can enjoy discounted entry until 21st September 2014, before the final closing date of 10th October 2014. Full details of our judges will be released very soon!

The AOP Awards, now in their 31st year, have long being recognised as the key event in the photographic calendar and winning an award from the Association carries huge kudos within the creative industries. Many winners have used their success to greatly further their careers and the extra publicity surrounding the event benefits all AOP members.

In a new departure for the AOP, this year will see the launch of a joint awards and expo with our partners, New Events Ltd. This industry trade fair will accompany the Awards alongside an exhibition of the winning images.

The event will be held on 11th, 12th and 13th December 2014, at The Business Design Centre in Islington, London, the Awards Ceremony taking place on the evening of Thursday 11th December.  The new venue will bring an exciting new format to the event - the two level gallery space allowing guests to circulate through the finalists’ gallery and enjoy the ceremony without being restricted by a formal setting.

Many companies within the imaging industry have already signed-up for space within the trade show. Further details on tickets will be made available nearer the time.

Rob Saunders, Director of New Events Ltd says: ‘We have been working closely with the board at AOP on the floor plan and we have come up with a great arrangement where industry and art will come together in a unique ‘fusion event’.’

Steve Knight, Chair of the AOP is also enthusiastic about the Awards; ‘The AOP Awards have always been a landmark event in the photographic year and our relationship with New Events will allow us to move forward with confidence. They are specialists in staging prestigious, large scale events and I’m sure the AOP Awards and Expo ‘14 will be a huge success. These are exciting times for the AOP with many new initiatives either planned or already underway, and a revitalised Awards is a key part of our future plans.’

For more information or exhibitor / sponsor prices please contact New Events Ltd on info@neweventsltd.com or 01483 420 229.

Membership and services review

As you may be aware the organisation recently advertised for a new General Manager. Through this process we came across Seamus McGibbon, who has worked as a Business Development Manager for the last eight years, six of them at the professional membership organisation the Theatrical Management Association - now known as UK Theatre. UK Theatre represent managers and organisations working in theatre and the performing arts, and is the sister organisation to the Society of London Theatres whose members are producers and theatre owners in London’s West End.

Seamus helped the TMA/UK Theatre build a programme of activity to enhance its membership, as well as engaging non-members in TMA activities. This included increasing the number of courses, conferences and events they held, and working with other bodies including the Arts Councils of the UK and CCSkills, the sector skills council for the theatre and music industry.  Due to Seamus' experience of membership organisations and the arts sector, we have asked him to work with us over the next month to take a fresh look at the AOP and what we do, and to help us develop plans to increase our membership and reach, to ensure we continue to represent those working in the photographic industry into the future.

Seamus is very keen to hear from you and to get your thoughts on what we currently do: what you think we do well; what we could do better; what makes us unique; how we can be stronger; new activities you think we should do; and what you think would attract new members to the Association.  If you want to drop him a line his email is seamus@aophoto.co.uk or you can call him on 020 3327 7209. He will be very pleased to hear from you.
