AOP short courses in photography

AOP Photographer member and experienced teacher Paul King leads three brilliant new AOP Photography courses - two half day courses perfect for beginners or those wanting to refresh their knowledge, or a weekend course for those wanting some more in depth learning about lighting and processing files - details of all three courses are below.

Dipping a Toe in the Water - course dates and times:

This half-day course explains how the basic camera controls work and their relationship with each other.

This course is designed for people new to photography or those looking to refresh their knowledge.

The 3.5 hour session will cover such topics as:

Exposure principles, grey cards v grey cells; The histogram; ISO sensitivity; White balance; Aperture and depth of field; Shutter speed - freezing movement and creating blur and reducing camera shake



Immersion - course dates and times:

A course which builds on the morning course (if attended) or on existing skills and knowledge and looks at the advantages of shooting raw files and the greater bit-depth they offer for control and versatility, i.e. getting value out of the money you’ve invested in your dSLR camera.

The 3.5 hour session covers the following:

Focus on image-processing from the raw files; dodging and burning for photojournalism; Local adjustment brushes and gradients; Skin retouch, use of the healing brush/spot-healing brush; A short look at frequency separation retouching. The Quick selection tool; The path tool; Scaling and moving for images for internet viewing or printing.

Students will require a lap-top running Photoshop or Lightroom.



Deep Dive - course dates and times:

Sat 23 & Sun 24 June 2018 10:00 to 17:30   BOOK HERE

The weekend course includes the first two sessions detailed above but with the addition of on the following day, learning skills in using available light for window portrait-shots plus single- and two-light set-ups for portraiture. You will also be guided as to the use of the different types of reflectors and light-shapers available, such as soft-boxes, umbrellas (both white and silver) plus honeycombs.

During the afternoon of this second day you will look at processing the portraits you shot during the morning to produce a file for print or web display.

Students will require a lap-top running Photoshop or Lightroom.
