We are a nation in a state of Flux. Nothing seems permanent. Everything seems transient. Consistent only in its inconsistencies.

The images selected powerfully evoke this sense of change. We hope you enjoy viewing them as much as we enjoyed choosing them.

This fortnight Katy Niker has chosen a great selection of both commissioned and personal work from our photographer members under the theme 'Aerial'.

Katy had this to say about her selection process:

"Initially I just went through the photographers work that came up when I selected the specialism Aerial, as I have always loved images from an elevated perspective of our amazing and complicated world.

I just chose images I was instantly drawn too, but what I really loved was seeing the diversity of the images when I looked at them altogether.  With Aerial photography I feel it is easy for a photographer to simply rely on the landscape below, but what I really like about this collection of images is how, to varying degrees, the photographer has influenced the image and what they wanted the viewer to see and appreciate."

''I’ve chosen the theme ‘Moments’ for my exhibition as it sums up my very favourite type of photography. I can never tire of looking at images of spontaneous captured moments, whether it’s a dynamic action shot or just an everyday scenario. It’s been fun looking through all the members work to pick my ‘Moments’ and interesting how many diverse styles and subject matters I came across that still fitted the theme.’'

16th November until 2nd December

With the Student Awards now open for entries, we thought it would be great to have a little warm up, and get our student members to show us what they are made of!

The following selected submissions form a curated online exhibition showcasing the talent of the AOP Student members. The exhibition will be live on the AOP Website from 16th November until 2nd December 2015.

There was no theme, only the stipulation that it must be something they are proud of, they are a member & they are not able to enter it in to the Student Awards.

The exhibition was curated by Stephen Potts, he said about the selection:

"It has been a great pleasure to curate this exhibition of work by AOP Student Members, the photographers who represent the future of our industry, I hope you enjoy seeing the quality and imagination demonstrated in their images that brilliantly capture a wide range of subjects."

Stephen Potts is a commercial photographer with over 30 years experience in the industry that began with an apprenticeship at an advertising studio in his home town of Belfast, self-employed since 1993, he shoots both moving and still images for advertising, corporate and industrial clients. Stephen was elected this year to serve as a Member Director on the AOP Board and is a committed advocate of the Association's role in supporting AOP Student Members to ensure the industry's sustainability.

AOP Student Award Winner, Kirstin Barnes
Kirstin Barnes

From 31 August until 7 September

Still in a daze from winning the AOP Student Awards 2015, Kirstin Barnes is delighted to be able to showcase some of her work with an AOP Online Exhibition. Barnes’ work tends to look at female issues of identity, sex, love and empowerment and is now increasingly involving new technologies and has progressed into film and installation.

The exhibition features her winning image, Laura, (2014) which was submitted to the charity category, for the Samaritans. The image was taken in daytime, just after a storm and aimed to catch the beautiful light and a girl tinged with sadness.

Also included is the series, The Beast In Me (2014). These images are all self –portrait and shot with just moonlight. The images portray a metamorphosis of being the used and abused of a sexual encounter, into the predator, the beast. They take you through a personal journey of Barnes’ own sexual empowerment.

Finally presented is Somebody’s Mother (2015). These are stills from a film, which will become an installation, looking at the possible effects that being a sex worker could have on their children’s lives and childhoods. These images have then been randomly digitally manipulated, creating sometimes uncomfortable and sometimes almost renaissance results. The images feature performance artist Kate Spence.

Consumption
Richard Allenby-Pratt

30th April - 31st May

The ‘consumption’ project has recently been selected as one of three finalists in the 2014 Syngenta photography award, Professional Commission, that recognizes the work of photographers who focus on subjects relating to the environment and sustainability. The winner will be announced at an event and exhibition at Somerset House in March 2015.

‘consumption’ seeks to uncover aspects of the supply chain associated with the modern consumer; from the extraction of resources, to processing, manufacturing, energy production, construction, logistics and retail, through to waste management and reuse - and many other aspects less immediately obvious. In so doing I also find myself looking at the way the natural, ancient, landscape of the United Arab Emirates is being utilised and consumed in the light of exponential, and unrestrained, development and growth. I also look at the more recent efforts to address sustainability issues such as the highest carbon footprint per capita in the world.

It suffuses the location with a powerful dream like quality which envelopes everyone present.

Aircraft Recycling in the UK
Tony Hutchings

3rd February until March 8th

This Project started when Tony Hutchings read an article about aircraft recycling in the UK. Having a life-long interest in all things related to aviation he decided to try to get permission to photograph aircraft at various stages of deconstruction. Unlike in the Mohave Desert where literally thousands of aircraft wait for years under the glare of the sun,  aircraft arriving at Cotswolds Airport do not stay in one piece for long. A Boeing 747 will arrive and immediately the avionics, engines and any other high demand parts are removed, assessed and boxed for shipping. The speed at which a plane is deconstructed leads to a real sense of a moment in time and within four weeks there is nothing remaining of the plane, the final part of the process is to tear up the hull and to transport the alloys to be turned into things like fridges and drinks cans. It is amazing what happens to the some of the more mundane features like doors and windows. Some parts of the aircraft are transformed into sculptures or modern furniture. Other parts like first class sleeper seats become spare beds in loft apartments

There seemed to be only four or five aircraft being deconstructed at any one time and interestingly 99% of the latest generation airliner is recyclable.

Tamera – Healing Biotope I

The project was founded in Germany in 1978. In 1995 it moved to Portugal. Today 170 people live and work on a property of 330 acres.

The founding thought was to develop a non-violent life model for cooperation between human being, animal and nature. Soon it became clear that the healing of love and of human community had to be placed at the center of this work. Sexuality, love and partnership need to be freed from lying and fear, for there can be no peace on Earth as long as there is war in love. The ecological and technological research of Tamera includes the implementation of a retention landscape for the healing of water and nature, as well as a model for regional autonomy in energy and food. Through the Global Campus and the Terra Nova School we are working within a global network on the social, ecological and ethical foundations for a new Earth – Terra Nova.

Ronnie and Reggie Kray’s Memorabilia
Dazeley

6th January 2015 until 2nd February 2015

This limited edition folio of 16 images was shot to record the memorabilia of Reggie and Ronnie Kray. The Kray twins were English gangsters who were foremost perpetrators of organized crime in London’s East End during the 1950s and '60s. They were arrested on 9 May 1968 and convicted in 1969 by the efforts of a squad of detectives led by Detective Superintendent Leonard "Nipper" Read, and were both sentenced to Life imprisonment.

The shots are of memorabilia, from the private collection of Andy Jones, of the Littledean Jail, and shows objects from their life of crime and their time at Her Majesty’s pleasure. The low level of weaponry is extraordinary by today’s standards. Reggie’s bayonet, knife and his artist’s paint set.  Ronnie’s cigarette case, comb, draught set, sawn off shotgun, pen and his infamous glasses.  Also in a letter from their mother to a friend discussing her sons, she mentions that they ‘are the most understanding and kindest of people one could meet they have never hurt anyone..’

Pete is an established photographer based in the Midlands whilst working nationwide.

His work is both powerful and thoughtfully executed and is in demand for projects on blue chip accounts, both in studio and on location, working in the creative and marketing industries.

The Nottingham Rugby player portraits are one of Pete’s latest projects.
Pete wanted to capture the authenticity of todays game, to get this the players were photographed directly on coming off the pitch after competitive matches, and we believe it shows. All these images were shot leading up to and during the push for promotion season.

Liquid Illusions
Ray Massey

28 October 2014 to 24 November 2014

Liquid Illusions explores how different mediums of liquid, air, oil, pigment and solids can interact to form abstract shapes when disturbed or energised into contact with each other and frozen by high speed electronic flash.

A fascination with uncertainty and the challenges presented by capturing moving liquids prompted Massey to produce this series of 12 "inkblot images". Abstract images created from undirectable fluids push the boundaries to replace some of the excitement and sense of anticipation that the instant gratification of digital photography has deprived us of.  The images were shot in large plate glass tanks: Lighting and liquid rigs, although complicated were distinctly "Heath Robinson" in structure.

Digital photography has deprived us of much of the anticipation, excitement and requirement of technical skills to create images. As with creativity itself; we must create and give it away in order to advance.

Massey builds complicated technical stages to a point where he must surrender and let the spontaneity and beauty of nature take over. Creating a stage where beauty can happen is as important as controlling it.

Fields of Battle, Terres de Paix 14-18.
Mike St Maur Sheil

Until 29 September 2014

Fields of Battle-Lands of Peace 14-18 is the result of a collaboration with the late Prof Richard Holmes and documents the battlefields of the First World War as they are today.

Sheil worked on the project for eight years, and estimates that over that time he spent 450 days photographing World War I battlefields from places as diverse as eastern Africa, Poland, Israel and Turkey. "The only major theatre of the war I didn't cover was Iraq," Sheil said. He's now a qualified battlefield guide, leading tours of sites along the Western Front from Belgium to Switzerland.

Sheil's aim was to show how even now, a century after the start of the war, the scarred landscapes in Flanders, on the Somme and Marne rivers, in the Vosges mountains and elsewhere can still reveal to the careful observer the stories of the millions of men who fought and died.

"There are still traces," Sheil said. "I don't think you'll ever eradicate them."

Bards Town Portraits
Lorentz Gullachsen

17 June to 15 July 2014

During the Stratford Upon Avon Arts Festival Gullachsen set up a pop-up studio in the towns square utilising a screen displaying the results as he shot his personal project.

Bards Town Portraits is inspired by the characters observed walking around Gullachsens' home town of Stratford Upon Avon. Gullachsen was drawn towards faces that Shakespeare would have recognised and maybe used as the model for characters in his plays. Photographing the artists, production crew, civil dignitaries and by inviting members of the public who engaged with the festival, over 100 portraits form the collection of which this exhibition represents a selection.

The subjects were all required to wear velvet cloaks that obscured fashion and hopefully produced images that have a timeless quality, although lit with a cinematic and theatrical approach .
