Photographer Overview

Hello! I’m James, a London fashion photographer and director; shooting advertising, beauty, lingerie, swimwear and specialising in luxury lifestyle.

Originally a warehouse raver from Blackburn, Lancashire, I spent the latter half of the 90s exploring the world on cruise ships - visiting over 150 ports in six continents. I found my first camera in the back of a taxi in Miami after a few weeks in the job, and with no formal training I traded beer with the onboard photographers for their help and advice.

In 2001 I returned home with the goal of developing my travel-photography hobby into a career as a fashion photographer. Over the following years I’ve shot everything from huge, multi-country productions with a cast and crew of over 60 to small, streamlined studio shoots. From rolling around on a carpark floor in the cold November rain to shooting in desert sandstorms and sweltering 43° heat when the laptop gets heat exhaustion!

I’m married to Emma; a fashion stylist, set designer, art director and integral part of Team Lightbown. We’ve been based in London for over 10 years with a beautiful little studio on the banks of the Thames that has the most amazing views.

In 2012 I moved into directing and love it, having just as much fun behind the monitor as I do behind the camera.
